This is a reposting of an email I recieved from one of the Neffsville Mennonite Church Delegates. I thought some of you might be interested in their insights.
The following provides a picture of what I experienced while at the Convention:
My delegate experience at the Mennonite USA Convention was a positive one. The city of Pittsburg was a delight and my friend and I had fun exploring it after the delegate sessions.
The delegate sessions were well organized and the group I was with was a no nonsense group and held a wealth of life experiences to grapple with the issues at hand. What impressed me throughout the delegate sessions was the intentional desiring of the Spirit’s leading in all aspects of the organization. The Bible study at the tables and each response prior to coming to grips with the assigned topic of discussion, demonstrated the desire of the Mennonite Church USA to discern and follow God’s leading.
The many facets of MCUSA and the leaders of various branches of the organization were introduced. I was so impressively affected by what the MCUSA is doing throughout the world and here at home, and the intelligent, dedicated, and passionate people who lead our church. I mostly thought of my Sunday School Class because I am close to them and I wanted to be able to convey to them the same understanding and pride that I gained as a delegate in being part of a church that is so diligent about carrying out the mission of the church of Jesus Christ and it’s intentional working together to make a difference in our world today.
The organization is impressive, the leaders are impressive, intelligent, committed, passionate and led by the Holy Spirit. It is my wish that all members of our church would begin to understand how unique and special the church is that they belong to.
Having been an educator all my life, I have learned that unless individuals work with the material to be taught, there may be little lasting knowledge take place. It is my impression that few members of NMC have a “great” respect for the Mennonite church; more of “ho-hum” attitude. Although through the years, perhaps, the uniqueness of our church was emphasized, I believe most members don’t put much thought into it.
How do we change this picture?
I believe we could do this through our Sunday School classes. If a quarterly curriculum would be set up that interestingly presents the issues dealt with at MCUSA in the format of the Bible Study engaged at the delegate sessions and the grappling of issues, perhaps, the above picture could begin to change. Along with that, if we could have core leaders of various aspects of MCUSA during the quarter speak to us, it would enhance what is being taught. One entire S.S. session would be to share and get response on the vision, purpose, and priorities of MCUSA. If this curriculum would be dealt with in such a way to be very interactive, people might not only learn but, also, enjoy the experience.
There definitely would need to be an emphasis on what makes the Mennonite church unique, such as our peace and justice emphasis.
My concern is for the future of the Mennonite Church, if we somehow don’t get this “picture” to our lay people.
Kindly Regards,
One of your delegates
